The Michigan Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS) is a Michigan incorporated private non-profit 501(c)(3) professional society.

The Michigan Scholarships in Conservation Program is designed to be a strong and continuing activity of the Michigan Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society to advance the science and art of good land use. The program offers Michigan Chapter SWCS members a convenient and significant way of providing long term support to the goals of the Michigan Chapter and the Soil and Water Conservation Society through facilitating the education of future soil and water conservation professionals.

These Scholarships are to encourage qualified students to enter the field of natural resource conservation and to prepare them for such careers through an organized program of study in an institution of higher education offering training in appropriate areas. Awards are based on interest in conservation as evidenced by scholastic ability and participation in conservation activities.

EMMA THOMPSON

2025-2026 ACADEMIC YEAR

SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

The 2025-2026 Academic Year Michigan Scholarships in Conservation Program scholarship is awarded to Emma Louise Thompson, a Junior at Grand Valley State University majoring in Natural and Environmental Resource Management with an emphasis on Ecological Restoration. Emma's passion for conservation started at a young age, influenced by the world around her. Growing up in the woods, Emma had the opportunity to connect with every sapling, spring ephemeral, and tadpole in sight.

After schooling, Emma's intention is to specialize in the ecological restoration field. She’d like to start out as a field technician dealing with invasive species, wetland delineation, or gathering data for restoration projects. Emma has worked with natural resources related organizations, including the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Pierce Cedar Creek Institute. Currently, Emma is Treasurer of Grand Valley’s Soil Judging Club and President of Grand Valley’s Society for Ecological Restoration.

"There are national associations for the preservation of wild flowers and the preservation of propagation of wildlife, but not for the preservation of the soil.  Conservation of this most fundamental and important of all resources is seldom seriously considered by anyone not directly or indirectly associated with the ownership or management of a farm, and is too infrequently considered even by the farmers themselves." 1928  Hugh Hammond Bennett, co-founder of the Soil and Water Conservation Society (formerly the Soil Conservation Society of America)
